A new report published today by the Stockholm Environment Institute, University of York, in collaboration with Help the Aged, calls on Government and public authorities to take action to better protect older people from the future effects of climate change.

Over 50s willing to be greener

Over 50s are ‘hopeful, motivated and positive’ about tackling climate change. A new survey, conducted by the University of York’s Stockholm Environment Institute, reveals the over 50s believe they are already being affected by climate change, and are willing to take action to reduce their carbon footprint.

The first national event to address impact of climate change on an ageing population has been staged in York. Liz Barclay spoke to participants Mervyn Kohler, special adviser for Help the Aged, and Dr Gary Haq, researcher on lifestyle and climate change at the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Workshop Highlights Link Between Climate Change and Ageing Population

The first national event to rise awareness about climate change and older people was held on 26 March in York. The event was attended by over 60 organisations and individuals interested in over 50s issues. The workshop was chaired by Liz Barclay, BBC Radio 4 Presenter of You and Yours and was addressed by a number of influential speakers. The participants discussed the key issues in a break-out session and gained consensus on a list of 20-30 recommendations that need to be taken forward to achieve change. These recommendations will be published in the workshop report in late April/early May and will be sent to key policy makers. Powerpoint presentation will be available soon.

Climate Talk in Knareborough

Climate Talk addressed 30 members of the Knareborough Probus Group. The meeting discussed the evidence for climate change, how will it affect the climate and the Yorkshire region and what actions we can do to reduce our carbon footprint.

The Carbon Cost of Christmas

From eating and drinking to giving and receiving, it is the time of the year when we do things to excess. Unfortunately, it also means we are likely to produce as much as 650 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person - equivalent to the weight of 1,000 Christmas puddings!
